Medieval Sant Mateu

The town of Sant Mateu takes a trip to its brilliant medieval past celebrating Sant Mateu’s Medieval Fair the second weekend in July. Sant Mateu’s historic centre is set to go back to 13th, 14th and 15th century and remember those times when the trade of wool with Florence made that Sant Mateu became one of the most important towns in the Kingdom of Valencia. That is reflected in its sensational and very well-preserved monumental heritage in the old part of the town, declared Good of Cultural Interest, and in its designation as the capital of the Maestrazgo of Montesa.

The streets of the historic centre are set with medieval decorations and are taken up by a medieval market with arts and crafts, period people, gooses walks, music groups, street entertainment… Additionally, local shops and different craftsmen offer their products during these days.

The celebration date coincides with the one that James I granted the Order of Knights of the Hospital to celebrate an annual fair in Sant Mateu (the first concession received in Castellon)
