This building was the place where the first medieval town hall, Cort Vella, was situated during the 13th and 14th centuries until it was moved to its current location, Cort Nova.

It stands out for the presence of two medieval dungeons in the basements, known since the 15th century, as well as an ethnological collection in the annexed rooms. The dungeons stand out for its thick load bearing walls, its barrel vault and its ashlar flooring.

It is said that in the beginning of the 15th century, during the visit of San Vicente Ferrer to Sant Mateu, a hermit who seemed to be the devil was imprisoned because he managed to get out from inside of one of the cells in spite of the shackles and bolts.
